Imugi The Dragon is a 2D underwater down-scrolling game based on Korean folk lore. The player takes on the role of a dragon named Imugi and must find virtues to become a fully grown dragon. Game consists of two levels: Shallows and Abyss.

Player descends through the maze-like ocean as they search for the virtues, encountering enemies, obstacles, and bits of story along the way. The further they descend, the more mysterious and chaotic the game becomes. Vision becomes more occluded and enemies chase the player rather than stay on a specified path.

  • Create two levels where the game aesthetic is exploration while satisfying curiosity through exploring new waters and their history.
  • Build an interactive tutorial to teach players the mechanics of the game.
  • Reuse limited amount of obstacles and enemies in a creative way to present new challenges to the player in a different way each time.

Responsibilities for the project:

Level Design:

  • Designed environment layouts of both Shallows and Abyss levels.
  • Placed lore objects, health pickups and coins around the levels to strengthen exploration aesthetic feel.
  • Designed Shallows level to teach players the mechanics and ensure they are comfortable by the time they get to the Abyss level.

Combat:

  • Designed both patrolling and chasing enemy types, spike corals and breakable corals.
  • Placed limited amount of enemy types around the levels to design unique and interesting combat encounters.
  • Designed pacing of combat encounters to have highs and lows in player interest curve.

Scripting:

  • Player Input (WASD movement and dashing)
  • Player health, checkpoint system, and collectibles.
  • AI behavior for patrolling and chasing jelly fishes.
  • Player, enemy and collectible animations.
